A move initiated by Mao Zedong in the late 1950s in which peasants would transform their lives themselves by using their own resources. Ideally, it was a democratic move; in reality, power was centrally controlled and its wielding resembled state abuse. Expectations of prosperity and an increase in productivity were also unrealistic. The Great Leap Forward ended in 1959.
